When I removed the bottom board from the hives I expected that to
take care of the ant problem. No such luck --- They just moved upstairs.
The
ants are now nesting between the inner and outer lids. Every time I
open the top there are ants and brood there. Thinking about it I can
understand there point of view, Warm, Dry, and plenty of sugar syrup in
the hive top feeder.
I left the inner cover out. now they only area that they could nest is about 2 inches in the center of the hive top feeder.
Ok, now for the real issue, my package hive (the one with the ant
problem) is not doing so well. I think the bee population is going down
in that hive not up. I am still feeding, when I checked sunday there
was brood, but the number of frames of brood is down from what it was a
month ago.
I am thinking about doing a spilt from the swarm hive
and breeding a new queen. If things don't pickup I may have to replace
the one.
